Sebastian Cabrera

Sebastián Cabrera is a Peruvian artist based in Lima. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Universitat de Barcelona (2004–2007), preceded by studies at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima (2002–2004). He later completed a Master’s in Artistic Production and Research at the Universitat de Barcelona (2008–2009) and a Master’s in Digital Video at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (2010–2011).

In his work, Cabrera explores the composition of spectacle and the complex relationship between image and viewer. Drawing from the constant flow of media, he collects visual notes that he then reconstructs into scenarios revealing underlying motifs and consequences. His practice examines the contemporary individual’s dependence on screens and the demand for visual affirmation as a way of understanding both self and environment.

Painting becomes the ideal medium for investigating the appearance and disappearance of elements within an event. Through a sense of movement that envelops objects and spaces, he seeks to disrupt the passivity often assigned to backgrounds and transient landscapes. Everyday and familiar elements, filtered through the subjectivity of the artist’s gaze, acquire an uneasy physicality that resists utilitarian perception. His compositions offer escapes from conventional laws of perception rather than clear paths to understanding, maintaining a pragmatic spirit in the ongoing struggle against the purely functional eye.
